    Dear MP participants.

Proud Papa here showing off my son’s good work. He’s an aspiring LA drummer, one of the voices in the BGVs, roughs mixer and “producer.” The band (Arcane Grace) voted in a blind test to use my master for Spotify etc.

I’m thankful for this community that doesn’t argue with me when my suggestions are good for the project at hand. I really thought it sunk in the first week of college when he called me up and said “Dad, your name is on the wall.” and I said “Son, I’m not the knucklehead you think I am!” Damn kids.

    Yeah Papa Paul!

Sounds awesome man! It’s so refreshing to hear a band that sounds like a band too!! I could totally see them playing this at a club and it would sound just like it, like in a really good way! Way to go Arcane Grace!!! 🔥

ps – check out the “tag” on you post below! I’m guessing it has to be AI! Even @dana isn’t that visionary hahahaha

    Hello Father Paul,

Congrats on you and yours son’s collabo. That’s my daddy-daughter dream.

The master sounds great, as does his drumming! Very tasty.

And I second Jesse that it’s nice to hear a live band sound. Kinda gentle-Weezer.

    Best,

    Jeremy

      Thanks fellas,

When Jesse made that observation that it sounds like a real band he nailed it. There’s no layering of other instruments going on, no tambo on the second chorus to lift the party mood as Dana will reply. Pretty basic stuff but a catchy little riff. He’s learning to think and hear beyond the now, as the band plays, into what the band might could arrange to add syncopation and more textures. … He called me this AM and wanted me to listen to a bongo part he added to the intro of the next release.

Jeremy. I hope you get that Daddy-daughter moment. I’ll cherish the moment my boy came off the stage after a set at the local record store / punk club. First gig playing music other than the high school orchestra stuff. He had bug eyes goin’ on, just radiated energy. He was bitten by the bug. I can recall when precisely i was bitten by that same bug, but in my case there were hallucinogenics involved.

I’ve got good stories. Most of them are true. (@patent pending)

Love, love, LOVE!!! This is so good for so many reasons, Paul!! The song and performance are great, the sounds are clean and clear and punchy and have a great sense of space and vibe, and the dad-son combo is the icing on the beautiful “stuff that really matters in life” cake! 🍰

“Gentle Weezer” 😂 – great observation, @shimmerisland! I love Weezer and Rivers’ solo “demos” albums are an absolute treat if you haven’t heard them. Working w them on their Red Album was one of my fav experiences as an engineer. They’re all so smart and fun and hilarious.

@-PT you know I was hearing all kinds of fun little bonus earcandy add-ons to lift diff sections lolol, but I absolutely appreciate this as it is – capturing a performance of great song played live by a great band! (That bass riff towards the end?! I was all, “woah!”)

My only mix curiosity that I would be keen to try if I were playing around with it would be to try muting the general room reverb to see what it’s like if the vocal and “regular rhythm instruments” are bone dry, vocal right upfront, no sauce; and the only saucy surprise would be those killing slide guitar parts that have the strong echo/verb on them. Basically, just upping the ante on the contrast btwn dry AF and surprisingly-verbed-out solo guitar riffs.

And there’s a good chance I’d try that and then be like, “nah, it was cool as it was”. But I would at least try it and see. 🥰

PS – looks like the tags on this thread disappeared! I was excited to see some clever/irreverant comedy gold, @JLew!
