  • GEYSER (Mix Feedback Please)

Posted by Jesse Lewis on at 9:51 am

    Hey MP Fam!

I’ve taken this mix about as far as I can and am kindly requesting your feedback, particularly in the area of the sound and mix. This is a song that was inspired by geysers in Yellowstone national park (you can hear their sounds featured throughout the recording) I will create a video to go with the song as well showcasing the geysers in all their glory!

I’m playing electric guitar and I invited a saxophonist to join me on this one, my first time trying to mix a sax!

There is no processing on the master channel except some very light SSL G Bus compression and I used the L2 to increase the volume to a competitive level.

    What do you all hear?

    Thanks in advance!

    Best Wishes,

    Jesse

    Dana,

I fear someone has hacked JLew’s account. There’s a hip hop drum loop AND a reversed snare inside the first 52 seconds. That’s as far as I got. It couldn’t possibly be him, could it? I’m confounded. Maybe someone spiked his eggnog and this is the result. We need your leadership now, more than ever. At least in the last year I’ve been hangin around.

Haha – You just haven’t heard this side of Jesse before! Check out this album he made back in 2008 that I mixed which reminds me of his new track “Blisters.”

@jlew – hearing this album again just now was so fun! It’s so good. And when I hear it I am instantly COLD 🥶 from the memories of being in that (amazing) vacant, mostly-unheated hanger of a studio in Oakland, CA during the winter.

Sorry I’m late to the party, Jesse. Coming out of my music cave and happy to hear some new sparkly sounds enter (or re-emerge) in your soundscape!

    My initial thoughts are:

    – Da Guitar sounds sick! Very Blade Runnery

    – Da Sax sounds like a great recording, I wish it has more sauce on it like the guitar

    – Da Beat (particularly the snare) sounds a little hot and crispy to my ears, somewhat painful (compared to, say, a Chappell Roan record I was just playing). And especially compared to your more gentle vibes in general.

    – The synths sound like their in a nice space to me

    – I might bring up some of the hose cool synths slightly louder in the foreground at the end

Otherwise, very beautiful and spacey / watery piece!

    Cheers from ice-cold Austin,

    Jeremy

Jesse! I agree with @shimmerisland‘s suggestions.

Sometimes that sax gets a bit lost when playing along with you and your melody. And is a bit dry compared to the wetness of everything else in the track.

When you and the sax are playing the melody, you both sound a bit over-compressed. Your burning solos sound nice and loud and less compressed, so maybe try that level and setting for the whole song for the guitar and sax and see what that’s like?

The snare is defs very crispy/bright compared to the rest of the instruments in the mix, so it’s hard to keep perspective with my comments. Part of me is like, “don’t change the snare! Add brightness and volume to everything else in the mix to match the snare!”

It’s really gorgeous and fun to listen to and I love the playing and the programming, man!!!!

Just easy little adjustments to bring it on home!

    Great work!!

Thanks so much, Dana! I’ll get back on this and try to make these improvements!!!

Thanks again to you @shimmerisland and @-PT for lending me your ears on this one!

      Love,

      JLew
