  • I'm pretty sure this is legal.

This was an exploration of some new technology. AI audio software caught my attention in retirement this year. I tried a few separation products and settled in on RIP-X. Stripping the vocals off a song and putting your own in sounds like dangerous fun to me. This song is NOT that., but it is my mashup of 5 or 6 commercially released songs from a band I enjoy. Vocals, drums, percussion, and the other instruments were separated into stems. This allowed me to pick and choose elements to work with. I can only take credit for the arrangement choices; rearranging lyrics to suit my intent, transitions between “songs” etcetera. The Giles Martin produced Beatles “Love” release started my curiosity.

Hey I know that band! 😂. What a trip, @detective – AND what a trip down memory lane! I recorded and mixed all but one or two of those “reimagined” songs. Wild what that technology can do! Loved your creative transitions too. Our own @avernet turned me on to that Rip-X software just the other day by posting it to our Black Friday Roundup and I was watching demo vids a couple nights ago – so cool!

Love your creative reimagining of these songs so close to my heart, using tools at the bleeding edge of technology! 🙌

As for the legality … (I’m certainly no lawyer and not giving legal advice here lol) … I’m fairly certain that creating things like this for private use is perfectly fine – and fun! Only if it made it’s way onto streaming platforms, youtube, or some other commercial platform would there be an issue and likely a takedown order or Content ID flag or potential legal issues. 🤘

Hey Paul! This was really cool! I enjoyed listening to that a lot! Thanks for sharing!

If you get a chance – Could you list the songs you used to make this? I really loved some of them and don’t know what they are!

I’ll have to check out that AI technology you were using. I haven’t played around with that stuff yet. Very interesting.

    thanks for sharing,

    Dana,

Thank you for the kind words. I’m so glad I took the risk of sharing it here in your forum knowing damn well who mixed the originals. That is encouraging to me and much better than the reactions I got from most of my “listeners.” There’s a couple audio artifacts that bug the hell out of me, but then again, my RX 10 skill is nowhere near my imagined imagination. I need more reps. It’s my retirement hobby.

    Jesse,

I’m happy to spread the word re: the band.

Avett Brothers They’re in the Americana genre but the first incarnation was a punk band called NEMO.

The songs on my fever dream are (in order) “I Wish I Was” from True Sadness, “Living of Love” from Emotionalism, “High Steppin,” “Bang, Bang, Bang,” and “Bleeding White” from the album entitled Closer Than Together. The previous sentence is a mouthful and a boatload of commas, but my English teacher wife assures me that that is proper grammar. The final song “I and Love and You” hails from the album of the same name and is a wonderful piece of sly writing.

The software I mentioned is as follows:
