Mid/Side for solo Guitar & Vocal
Posted by Joe Robinson on March 17, 2026 at 8:58 amHi all! Haven’t posted in the forum lately but it’s nice to pop back in – I wanted to share this recording. I’ve been experimenting with recording solo guitar and voice in mid/side.
I was wanting some stereo image on the guitar, but without getting weird phase issues with the voice. I would to hear any suggestions about other methods to achieve this?
Cheers!! Joe

O….M….G, @joerobinson – you are incredible! What an unbelievable rendition of this song, with playing and soloing and changes and modulations to make a person’s face MELT! 🫠⚡️
Amazing video production as well, homey, wow.
Love your M/S setup – what a great idea, and it sounds excellent on my laptop. I’ll give it a proper listen in the studio tomorrow.
Which mics are you using, btw? They look snazzy!
Great to “see” ya, man!!

Thank so much, Dana!! I really appreciate the kind words!! I’m using a C12 replica made by Bill Bradley, love that mic – and then a Cascade fathead for the side. It seems to work for what I do and it’s pretty simple & quick to set up, which is a big plus for me! Cheers and thanks for taking the time to listen, hope all is well!!!

@joerobinson !!! This is incredible man. And your playing is NEXT level!!!
…and as GREAT as the electric guitar playing was, my favorite part was the sound of the acoustic and your singing. I think you could make an album just like that (maybe you already have? if so, let us know)
I think you totally nailed the M/S recording. Your acoustic tone is SOOOO beautiful, it’s exactly how I dream of an acoustic guitar sounding. So rich and warm. I’d ask about your eq and processing –but I know that that guitar would sound just as rich if I was right there in the room. Beautiful music, as always. I look forward to the next one!
Best Wishes,
❤️

Thanks so much Jesse!!! Great to hear from you!! I do hope to make a solo guitar vocal album at some point soon, I was pretty inspired by the recent Jason Isbell Foxes In The Snow album, such good performances and I love the sonics of it.
Not too much going on with processing on the track – only EQ is a high pass at 80hz on my preamp, then a little bit of the Audioscape ‘Opto’ comp, – on the ‘mid’ mic, and a little bit of de-esser too. Using the Seventh Heaven reverb, with high and low pass on the reverb send, like Dana mentioned in his recent reverb email!! I also used a little bit of Soothe and the Pro L2 when mastering.
I don’t know how you usually record electric guitar, but it’s something i’ve always struggled to capture in the perfect way..!
Cheers and hope all is well!!!
