    Alex,

I took the initiative to extract the bass and kick from your 2 track mix. The separation process does leave some artifacts and we’re dealing with mp3s so there’s some fidelity issues. The RIP-X software is not perfect but the point I made about the tonality of those two instruments is shown to be true. I rest my case.

Hey @Gage and @detective! Been merging in our threads to this discussion so that other members can find the full shebang in one place and follow along. Thank you both for your excellent shares and contributions! ⚡️🤘

Alex!! Love this! If u have it in u, could u copy\/paste what u wrote and reupload the audio to the Member Spotlight forum? 🙏🏻. Meantime, here’s an explanation on how to do that, as well as some mix thoughts. The mix is fantastic, as are you!

Thanks a Milly Dana! Sorry for being a tourist and not uploading correctly whoops. I will do that correct next time. Also, thanks so much for taking the time out and listening and giving great feedback. I will totally attempt what you said and think it really does just need that aggressive punch. Kicks a little flat comparative to the wide bass. Mucho respect!!

    Alex,
    First listen and immediate reaction…
I’d bet the reason you’re questioning the low end of your mix is because how different it is from the wonderfully controlled mid and top end. Your arrangement allows the listener to easily navigate back into the mix to find the stereo percussive ear candy and into the vocal reverb without having to machete through density. It’s a pleasure to listen to. Vocal articulation is paramount to my biases. Super clean and accessible.
The bass guitar and kick drum have a wholly different vibe. Comparatively I hear them as woolly, the direct opposite of the rest of your luscious mix. They’re (kick and bass) not as available to my ears and other listeners. I’m thinking bass and kick with a mid and high end component would compliment what you’ve got cooking and make it even better. Great work.

      Detective Tucci,

Haha I love this. Appreciate the beautiful detail of your listening notes. Absolutely agree with the low-mid and low-high end clarity. Exactly what I believe Dana was alluding to so that’s what I’ll clean up. Push a little more aggression into the kick. Thanks so much for the listen, compliments and energy detective!!

This is an amazing sounding track Alex, so well mixed & balanced with just the right vocal effects. The artist has a killer flow too, much props to all involved. I tend to put a UAD ATR-102 on my mix bus at the beginning of the chain to drive into, would this be similar to what you are recommending in the Vimeo video Dana with the NLS/Desk emulations? Also question about Avid HEAT, how do ya’ll use it as I like to put it on PRE on everything but the vocals & would you put it on as an addition to an NLS or other emulation, or would that tame the transients too much having multiple desk emulations going? Thanks for sharing all, MIX ON! =)

As my dear friend, mentor, and absolutely SLAYING producer/mixer/engineer, Greg Fidelman would say: “I’m not afraid.”

As in ‘woah, Greg, you have a tape emulation, a console emulation, a compressor, HEAT, a Pro-L2 AND a God Particle on your mixbus??’

Greg: ‘yeah why not? I’m not afraid.’

Hahaha. I love it. To be clear, that signal chain listed above is completely made up by me. But the sentiment stands, and I’ve stood by it, in his honor, forever and ever amen.

Try EVERYTHING. Experiment endlessly. Don’t knock something till you’ve tried it. Mix like no one’s watching. Make the insecure Gearspace peanut gallery living rent-free in your sub-conscience SQUIRM and GASP at the horrors of your ‘novice’ ingenuity! Have fun! No rules!!

There is literally only one thing that matters: DOES IT SOUND GOOD?

      If so, fear not.

Going to try that chain on the next Mix Bus. You may have cracked Mr. Peanut wide open with that one Dana…
