“WE” Mix Feedback Please:)
Posted by Jesse Lewis on at 11:40 amDear Friends,
I hope you are all doing well! I’m kindly requesting your ears for a new song I’m working on. With your encouragement I’ve tried my hand at singing again! My wife is playing the trombone parts! Could you please let me know your thoughts on this mix? Thanks so much MP Fam!
Love,
JLew

JLew,
What a beautiful composition. And sentiment. That section you create (1:57) when the bass drops in, the horn line descends, and the choir of quasi-falsetto J-Lettes spread their wings and sing like angels is moving.
More J-Lettes! That’s my mix suggestion.
Maybe lose the guitar squeaks too??
She is you And you are she.
As you are me and we are all together.
Goo goo g’job!

Thanks so much for the encouragement and the suggestions. I shall see if the J-lettes are available for another session haha
Hope you are doing well my friend!

Jesse!! Man, this is so gorgeous and creative and fresh and cool! I love it!!
Love the vocal sound and textures – amazing work man! I especially dig the low voice that comes in at times to punctuate certain lines. There’s such a nice rich bottom on those vocal moments that’s really effective (a la the “warm hug” treatment!).
In your upper register voice you kinda sound like Chris Martin – super cool. Like if Coldplay did a collab with Nick Drake. 😲 🔥
And Sara on the bone? Come ON! What an incredible tone and texture for this record, and I really dig how hearing you both on this piece together brings even greater meaning to the lyrics. Also when her low notes came in halfway through – daaaaamn! That was so cool.
LOVE your surprise reharm moments at the end with your great bgv textures!! Way to keep “the party” moving and evolving, continually drawing the listener in, taking us on a journey, never stagnating. As a listener I feel like you’re gently guiding me through the rooms and hallways of your mind, and behind each door there’s a little gift on the floor of a sunlit room, and you’re like, “go on in. open it. that’s for you.” And I’m like, “really?? another gift? for me?” And when I untie the bow and open the little box new colors and sounds emerge, swirling and dancing around my ears.
I promise I’m 100% sober. haha. All I’m saying is, what fun sonic journey and a beautiful song! Bravo!!

Jesse, this is such a beautiful song! I got a serious José González right from the start. I think your structure totally works, and I love the texture. There’s a really nice ambience to it – like you’ve run everything through tape. And that trombone! If she doesn’t hire herself out as a freelancer (although that’s the old joke: what’s the definition of an optimist – a studio trombone player with a pager😄), maybe she should. Completely solid, beautiful tone, the sustain – spot on. My only comment on the production, is that the key seemed just a tiny bit too low. You really got down there in the first verse (you pulled it off), but maybe a half step or a whole step up might be a little bit better suited for your range. Don’t get me wrong – I love your voice, and you should definitely be getting back into more singing, for sure. Great job👍🏻

Thanks so much, Staurt! I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and share your thoughts – and for your encouragement. I’m glad you liked the song!
It’s funny – I totally agree with you about the key of the song. In fact, I had already moved it up by a step because I wasn’t able to hit the low notes — but then problem that I ran into was that my vocal range is so limited (less than an octave without breaking into falsetto) that then I couldn’t hit the high notes haha. I either need to write songs with a smaller vocal range or take some voice lessons haha!
Thanks again for listening and sharing your feedback.
Best,
JLew
