  • Thank you so much Dana!! I had a blast mixing this with the Chaos to Clarity protocol you laid out. That is a really great workflow.

For the video I used the Fab Filter Pro L-2 to bring up the level. During the mix I was trying to keep the peaks under that 6db buffer and it did feel pretty quiet.

RE Stereo Width – I have Keyscape Wurli and Rhodes parts, played by yours truly (not a real keyboard player 😅) that I panned hard left and right during the intro because it felt more interesting. I will experiment with panning them for the whole song – excited to try that!

RE Tom Fills – I was thinking they were a little loud too – will try panning them a little closer to center, I think they are panned 70% here.

RE Compression – I actually don’t have any compression or eq on any of the individual tracks, just HPF’s, a Studer A800 plug on the guitar and a tiny bit of bus compression. I think the snare was squashed a little during tracking – will investigate further as I do have a bunch of drum mics that I disabled.

I did watch your Compression settings zoom which was great!

I’m going to re-work this mix a little and send it off to Richard Dodd for mastering.

    A few quick questions:

    • Is there a lufs number you shoot for when mixing?
    • RE small speakers – is this like a set of desktop computer speakers, or something like NS10’s?
    • With your D-command, how much volume automation do you tend to write on a live-band type recording? I tend to ride each instrument like i’m ‘playing the song’ – would love to know how you approach this.

Thanks so much for taking the time to listen,
    Joe

Really cool track, Jeremy!! I was drawn right into the chords and groove, and was smiling at the cool vocal ad libs and other ear candy. I don’t want to send you in mixing circles, but I was wanting to hear the vocals more, especially the beginning of the chorus / title of the song. Just listening on earbuds. Cheers and all the best with the release! Joe

  • Great to connect with you, Nathaniel!!!

  • Thanks so much for the reply Dana!!! I’m going to dig out some little desktop speakers!!
Cheers and thanks for all the help!

Hi Jesse – this track is so beautiful and I found it really inspiring!! I have a song i’m trying to write for my son, he just turned 1. I have some nice verses but am still searching for the right chorus. The way you’ve crafted this song is masterful!! Kudos and thanks for sharing it!!

I also wanted to let you and Dana know – it is so cool to listen to V1, read the comments, V2, read the comments, V3, hear how much better the track is. I learned a lot! The V3 recording sounds fantastic to me. It presents your voice beautifully and the low bump really brings out those lower notes in the verse. Really awesome to hear this develop!!

Nice one Jeremy! Dana’s suggestion of voc down & beat up seems on point to me!! Overall I felt the chorus popped more than the last version – really cool track!!

Thanks Paul! Nice to connect with you and i’ll go take a listen to Patrick Harber’s posts! I’ll be working up a new mix of this song based on Dana’s suggestions and plan on re-posting here! I really appreciate the feedback. Cheers! Joe

Thank you SO MUCH Dana, can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to listen and share these resources. This kind of individualized feedback is so incredibly valuable.

I love your Chaos to Clarity PDF!! Seriously, that is really helpful. I tend to get a balance going during overdubs and build from it come mix time, but your method makes a lot more sense. 😅

Excited to dive into your compression video and i’ll circle back when i’ve had a chance to re-work this tune with all this in mind. Take care and thank you so much again,
    Joe
